Make sure your passports are protected warns myID

 Since 2006, every passport issued within the United Kingdom contains biometric technology, which stores unique information on the holder, such as facial features and personal details. Whilst this was introduced in a measure to improve security, it also leaves the holder vulnerable to criminals who can read the data contained on the passport remotely using Radio frequency identification (RFID). This information can then be used to clone the passport and can lead to identity theft.

Responding to these potential security concerns, Avid products has launched the myID range of passport covers, which as well as offering a smart way to carry your passport, also contain RFID blocking technology hidden in both the front and back covers – meaning the holder’s details remain fully protected, without compromising on style.

The myID passport covers come in two different styles – the Executive holder comes in premium black leather and is available for £19.99. The Traveller passport cover comes in stylish brown faux leather and costs £11.99.

Did you know;

  • There are over 3 million biometric passports in the UK.
  • Using RFID technology, a criminal does not even need to possess the biometric passport to obtain its details – it can be done remotely from a distance of a few metres.
  • In a recent survey of 3,000 holders of biometric passports carried out by www.itsmyid.co.uk, 59% were unaware of the level of personal data now held on biometric passports. The same number regard their passport as the most valuable piece of ID, yet 31% do not know if they have a biometric passport.
  • Recent research conducted by myID found that the average female’s handbag contains goods worth £343, with 72% of women surveyed stating that they also carried their passport or drivers licence as ID. However many were unaware of the potential risks associated with carrying a passport.
  • As well as protection, passport holders can also help prevent theft by concealing the identifying country mark on the front of the passport.
  • When applying for a renewal passport, people are only eligible if their passports are undamaged. This makes a holder essential to prevent wear and tear – especially for those that travel frequently.
